Plans for wind turbines at Langthwaite to go on display

Plans to install wind turbines near Millom are to be presented to the public at an exhibition organised by renewable energy company, Cornwall Light&Power (CLP). The project is proposed for land at Langthwaite Farm.

The exhibition will be held at Millom Network Centre on Friday 5th February (2pm-8pm) and at Kirksanton Village Hall on Saturday 6th February (10am-2pm). Visitors will have a chance to learn more about outline plans for the site, comment on the scale of scheme they would like to see, and ask questions of the development team.

Steve Allen, Development Manager at CLP, said: "Our proposals for Langthwaite give the local community an opportunity to benefit from clean electricity.

“The purpose of the exhibition is to engage with people living near the site, to explain the process we have gone through in confirming Langthwaite is suitable, and to hear people’s views to help shape our eventual planning application. Our initial studies show that the site would be a good location for a project of this kind, with consistently strong wind speeds, but at this stage nothing is set in stone. We welcome the views of residents in helping us develop a renewable energy scheme that they are comfortable with.”

A report released last week by Sir Martin Holdgate for Cumbria Vision revealed that the county is poised to meet a third of its total energy needs from renewable sources by 2020, and double that by 2050. By 2050 the County could become a significant exporter of renewable energy with 5.5 gigawatts** (5.5GW) of installed capacity, and meet the energy needs of over 300,000 people through a vibrant mix of wind, hydro, tidal, solar, geothermal and biomass. The scheme at Langthwaite could contribute to this energy mix.
