Following refinement to remove unwanted fatty acids and food remnants, used vegetable cooking oil (UCO) can be used as a fuel for power generation.
The end product reacts similarly to normal fuel when highly compressed inside a diesel engine.
Fuel can be collected in many forms, from small personal kitchen waste oil deliveries to larger community collection schemes and there are various different methods of refining UCO from filtration and chemical separation to heating or gravitational separation.
Renewable Energy Generation Ltd. uses a proprietary, six stage refinement process and uses commercially available diesel engines to generate electricity and heat from the resultant product. Initial tests indicate more power and lower emissions than other competitor's fuels.
